In recognition of this issue, the World Health Organization (WHO) spearheads the annual observance of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) from November 18th to 24th, emphasizing the importance of responsible antibiotic use and the need for collective action.
Under the theme “Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together,” WAAW rallies individuals, communities, and organizations worldwide to raise awareness and implement measures to address AMR comprehensively. It serves as a platform to educate, advocate for policy changes, and promote sustainable practices in the use of antimicrobials.
Amidst this crucial campaign, innovative projects like NeoGiANT have emerged, pioneering solutions to combat AMR. Coordinated by the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), NeoGiANT aims to revolutionize the way we approach antibiotic usage in farmed animals.
The project centers on the development of a suite of products—ranging from animal feed to treatment solutions and sperm extenders—designed to reduce reliance on antibiotics and replace synthetic preservatives. These groundbreaking products harness natural extracts derived from an advanced isolation technique, emphasizing sustainability and efficacy.
One such extract, e-Vitis, is sourced from grape marc, a byproduct of high-quality white wine production. NeoGiANT leverages green extraction approaches to unlock bioactive compounds within grape marc, creating a potent, ready-to-use extract. This natural solution not only curtails microorganism growth but also enhances animal health and welfare.
NeoGiANT’s innovative approach addresses the dual challenge of improving animal performance while mitigating AMR risks in livestock and aquaculture. By offering antimicrobial and antioxidant protection to animals, these products serve as a prophylactic treatment against infectious diseases while reducing the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance.
As World Antimicrobial Awareness Week draws attention to the critical need for collective action against AMR, projects like NeoGiANT exemplify the innovative spirit required to confront this global challenge. Through collaborations, advancements in research, and a commitment to responsible practices, we can pave the way for a future where antibiotics remain effective tools in safeguarding human and animal health.
Take the chance and exchange experiences and knowledge about the importance of finding sustainable alternatives to reduce AMR.
