NeoGiANT offers an innovative solution based on the known potent natural antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of grape marc extracts, due to their arsenal of phytochemicals. Suitable bioactive molecules from white grape marc will be identified, with a validation of their benefits (e.g., antimicrobial, antioxidant) and recovered for matching their sustainable sourcing and processing with efficient and cost-effective use in animal production.
Customers demand solutions for animals’ health with no side effects for animals and final consumers. They also demand environmentally friendly products. Natural extracts produced within the NeoGiANT project fulfil these demands. These extracts will be produced as an alternative to synthetic compounds with antimicrobial and antioxidant capacities. NeoGiANT products are based on 3 pillars:
1) The use of local biomass sources
2) Cost-effective, efficient and sustainable production
3) Obtained functional ingredients in sustainable circular economy production systems.
The advanced properties of the natural extract will provide antimicrobial and antioxidant protection to the animals improving their performance and serving as a prophylactic treatment. The target products to be developed will be designed to control a large number of infectious diseases of paramount importance in animal production, both in livestock and aquaculture. Moreover, the emergence of new antimicrobial resistances (AMR) will be reduced, and existing antimicrobial resistances will be better controlled.
OBJECTIVES
The main objective of NeoGiANT is to develop and validate innovative natural formulations with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties from the valorisation of white grape marc, to be used in cattle, swine, poultry and farmed fish production in the FEEDING, HEALTH and REPRODUCTION areas, aiming to reduce the dependence on the use of antibiotics in animal/aquaculture production. This strategy should significantly contribute to the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR) derived from the production of animals on farms, by providing an economically viable alternative to the routine use of antibiotics.
