On September 27th, 2024, the streets of nearly 400 European cities came alive with curiosity, discovery, and science. The European Researchers’ Night, an annual event that has been bridging the gap between researchers and the public since 2005, once again offered a unique opportunity for citizens to engage with science in an accessible and entertaining way. Promoted by the European Commission under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions of Horizon Europe, this event brought together scientists and the public to showcase the vital role research plays in our everyday lives. In Spain, seven projects were funded by the Commission for the years 2024 and 2025, alongside two associated projects, ensuring a broad and exciting range of activities across the country.
One of the highlights of the event was the participation of NeoGiANT, a project dedicated to combating antimicrobial resistance through the development of natural antimicrobial products. NeoGiANT showcased its work in turning agrifood byproducts into sustainable solutions for animal health, offering a glimpse into how science can help solve one of modern medicine’s greatest challenges: the growing resistance to antibiotics.
Visitors had the chance to learn how NeoGiANT leverages natural extracts, such as those from white grape marc, to create innovative products that not only enhance animal health but also support the shift towards a circular economy. By focusing on alternatives to antibiotics, NeoGiANT is paving the way for a more sustainable approach to disease control in animal production.
Beyond NeoGiANT, attendees across Spain enjoyed hundreds of free activities, including experiments, workshops, demonstrations, theatrical performances, and more. These events provided a platform for researchers to share the benefits of their work with the public, highlighting how scientific advances shape our daily lives and societal progress.
From science monologues to guided tours of laboratories, European Researchers’ Night 2024 was an inspiring event for all ages, sparking curiosity and celebrating innovation. It was a night where visitors could meet the minds behind transformative projects like NeoGiANT and many others working to make the world a better place, one discovery at a time.
Take the chance and exchange experiences and knowledge about the importance of finding sustainable alternatives to reduce AMR.
