Can you explain the role of the sustainability department in the NeoGiANT project?
Contactica’s sustainability team is responsible for the eco-design and pre-commercial pre-industrial scale validation work package of the NeoGiANT solutions. This work package involves team at all stages of the NeoGiANT product value chain.
We coordinate a series of tasks related to the eco-design of the ecodesign of the production process and the main approach we use is the Life Cycle Assessment methodology. Life Cycle Assessment. It applies to environmental, economic and social aspects and serves to sustainably guide industrial scale-up through multi-objective optimization.
Considering the ecological design approach proposed in the project, what does this approach mean and why does it apply to a project like NeoGiANT?
Ecodesign is the integration of sustainability components into the design of a product or process. The first step is to apply the Life Cycle Assessment methodology to calculate the potential impacts from the extraction of raw materials to the end of life of the product.
These stages are defined at the time of producto design of the product and therefore it makes sense to apply this to support the process during its development and to integrate sustainability and integrate sustainability recommendations with optimal environmental footprint, cost and social impact.
What kind of results and indicators will be calculated as part of the ecodesign study?
Each pillar of sustainability has its indicators, such as climate change through carbon footprint or fossil resource depletion for the environmental aspect, then the calculation of the levelized cost of production from the economic angle, and finally the job creation potential from the social perspective.
This approach is complemented by more technical studies, such as industrial process simulation, which makes it possible to better orient the stage of the production process on an industrial scale. Finally, the multi-objective optimization tool takes into account all the parameters evaluated, whether in terms of sustainable or technical performance, and proposes a new production scheme that is as optimized as possible.
Regarding the Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA), could you briefly explain what it is and how it will be applied to NeoGiANT?
LCSA is a holistic scientific approach based on standards and guidelines to assess based on standards and guidelines for assessing environmental impact through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the (LCA), the economic impact through Life Cycle Costing (LCC), and the environmental impact through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC) and social impact through Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC) and Social Life Cycle Analysis (SLA). These three types of assessment are carried out in the NeoGIANT project to assess the sustainability of the different products (extracts) developed.

Since 2020, he has worked for several European R&D Projects as LCA LCA using the different methodologies and guidelines related to LCA on environmental, economic and social aspects, applied to various sectors such as construction, agri-food or even energy.
About Contactica
Since 2009, Contactica Innovation has established itself as a consulting company offering highly specialized services in innovation and development, addressing the full spectrum of requirements of any given R&D&I project. Beginning with the research, proposal, and securing of funding, and finally focusing on the execution, Contactica ensures the final success of the project by relying on the cooperation of all research partners within our network of research centres.
Contactica Innovation has four highly-specialized departments that collaborate from the beginning to the end of a project. They are Proposal Writing, Exploitation, Sustainability and Communication and Dissemination of European projects This focused approach allows Contactica to offer optimum support and the highest level of expertise during each phase of a project.
Contactica’s large and diverse team of professionals consists of doctors, technicians, and engineers, in permanent cooperation with diverse research centres, that offer state-of-the-art research and development services. Having a broad range of backgrounds, whether it be market studies, foresight, managing international agreements, etc., Contactica can provide the best solution for developing new products. In addition to the previously mentioned services, Contactica provides its clients with a department that is dedicated to sustainability.
Contactica has a team of seven Sustainability technicians whose degrees span several fields of engineering and sciences, including Chemical, Environmental, Industrial, Marine, and Biological Sciences. They contribute not only to the execution of European projects but also provide other consulting services to third parties, internationally. Their services include, among others, environmental analysis (carbon footprints, ecolabels, EPDs), Life cycle Assesment (LCA), life cycle costing (LCC), social-life cycle assessment (S-LCA) and tools and tailor-made training. It aims to disseminate the culture of the sustainable management of resources.
